The Veterinary Technician supports hospital operations by providing dedicated quality veterinary care and exceptional service to our patients and clients. You will assist in providing patient care, conducting examinations, assisting during surgery, provide nursing care, and maintaining patient medical records.
Tasks include:
- Determine animal requirements by conducting examinations and interviews, reviewing care plans and records, completing laboratory tests and studies, and diagnostic imaging.
- Care for patients by taking vital signs, collecting samples, administering medications, drugs, and vaccines, and bandaging and wrapping wounds.
- Support patient examinations and operations by assembling required supplies and instruments, securing and bringing patients to examination rooms, and restraining patients.
- Fill prescriptions and administer medications, including proper documentation, logging and security of controlled drugs.
- Maintain a safe, secure, healthy and humane environment by following documented standards and procedures in compliance with applicable legal regulations.
- Maintain medical records by documenting patients' conditions, reactions, and changes; updates database in an accurate and timely manner.
- Ability to demonstrate and follow correct procedures in catheter placement, phlebotomy, emergency medicine, and digital radiology.
Minimum Qualifications/Requirements:
- High school diploma, GED or equivalent combination of education, and/or experience.
- Two or more years of experience with veterinary appointments performing above duties.
- Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT), Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT), Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT), or the Licensed Veterinary Medical Technician (LVMT) preferred.
- Able to perform moderately physically demanding work, that requires a lot of lifting (up to 50 pounds), cleaning, and constant motion.
- Ability to work with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors.
- Must be flexible with scheduling and able to work some weekends and holidays.
Shift is as follows: Tuesday-Friday 9p-7a

Carolina Veterinary Specialists in Charlotte is seeking an experienced professional to join our Emergency service as a 1st Shift daytime ICU Technician or Assistant. This position is for Monday-Thursday, some holiday and on-call coverage.
**PLEASE NOTE: All applicants must have a minimum of 1-2 years of experience as an assistant or technician to be considered for this position.**
Joining our team will enable you to work alongside a team of highly-skilled technicians and assistants and the area's best board-certified specialists and emergency clinicians. You'll enjoy a unique and satisfying work schedule in a learning-based atmosphere where you'll acquire new knowledge and develop advanced technical skills.
DUTIES
The ICU Technician is responsible for all aspects of patient care in ICU including hourly treatments, directly overseeing critical patients, communicating/updating doctors and staff about their patients in ICU and assisting with life-saving measures including CPR when necessary.
As a member of the ICU, you will work one-on-one with patients admitted to hospital through our emergency and specialty services. You'll have a hands-on role in providing attentive and compassionate nursing care through the administration of treatments and medications, assisting with diagnostic procedures, and communicating patient status to hospital staff and pet owners.
Specific duties include but are not limited to:
Calculating dosages and administering medications via varied routes
Checking vital signs and performing abbreviated patient assessments (including temperature, pulse, heart rate, respiratory rate and effort, blood pressure via Doppler, etc)
Maintaining patient cleanliness and comfort
Phone triage and providing clients with patient updates
Communicating changes in patient status to the appropriate person(s)
Essential after-hours client care services including check-in, check-out and taking payment
Maintaining a neat and organized work environment
Assisting ER Treatment Technicians in their daily duties
Performing a variety of standard and advanced patient treatments including oxygen and nebulizer therapy, CRI's, wound treatment/drain maintenance, feeding tube treatment/maintenance, post-operative monitoring, catheter placement (variety) and maintenance, fluid therapy (pump, burrette), orthopedic and nerologic therapies, & ECG monitoring (traditional and telemetry)
QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate will have excellent communication and multi-tasking skills as well as a keen attention to detail. S/he will be able to work well as part of a team, sharing the caseload and having a proactive approach to helping maintain a shared sense of responsibility among the Emergency service. S/he will also possess the following qualifications:
1-2 years of experience as a veterinary assistant/technician
Strong technical skills including venipuncture, catheter placement, general laboratory, anesthesia and pharmacology skills
Knowledge of normal patient (cat/dog) parameters
Knowledge of basic medical terminology
Working knowledge of the indications, adverse effects and dosing considerations for commonly-used veterinary medications
Ability to work both independently with little supervision as well as part of a team
Strong work ethic and good organizational and multi-tasking skills
Able to lift 50 pounds
Schedule compatibility including weekends, some holidays and on-call
